Former Minister Yiannis Kefalogiannis was found guilty and sentenced on one-year probation at today’s court in Rethymno, Crete. The New Democracy member of the Greek parliament was also acting as an informal adviser to the Prime Minister Konstantinos Karamanlis.Also, was sentenced Arkadios Spanoudakis, regional director of education in Crete, member of the same political party in Rethymno. They both appealed the decision.
According to the charges, Kefalogiannis exercised pressure to police officers to lie on behalf of a Mylopotamos citizen who had been arrested on charges of cultivating cannabis.
Officers of the Special Police Force Crime Indictment charged that the minister had asked two officers to claim that a drug dealer, in pending court date, was innocent. They said, Kefalogiannis offered them, in exchange, assignment of a public position for the wife of one of the two and promised good treatment in the Police for both officers.
The Judge concluded that a member of the parliament calling a policeman to his political office and suggesting for a case, already in the court, is punishable.
It was mentioned in the media that, Eleftheros Typos newspaper did not published anything for the scandal. This paper belongs to Vardinogiannis and Kefalogiannis is Vardinogiannis brother-in-law.

Σε 12 μήνες με αναστολή καταδικάστηκε ο πρώην υπουργός και βουλευτής της ΝΔ και σύμβουλος του Πρωθυπουργού, Γιάννης Κεφαλογιάννης, από το Μονομελές Πλημμελειοδικείο Ρεθύμνου.
Εκτός του κ. Κεφαλογιάννη, σε έξι μήνες φυλάκιση καταδικάστηκε ο Αρκάδιος Σπανουδάκης, περιφερειακός διευθυντής εκπαίδευσης Κρήτης και πρόεδρος της ΝΟΔΕ Ρεθύμνου. Και οι δύο άσκησαν έφεση κατά της απόφασης.
Ο κ. Κεφαλογιάννης βρέθηκε στο εδώλιο, καθώς, σύμφωνα με το κατηγορητήριο, άσκησε πιέσεις σε αστυνομικούς να ψευδομαρτυρήσουν προκειμένου να αθωωθεί κάτοικος του Μυλοποτάμου, ο οποίος είχε συλληφθεί για καλλιέργεια ινδικής κάνναβης.
Αφορμή στάθηκαν οι καταγγελίες αστυνομικών της Ειδικής Αστυνομικής Υπηρεσίας Δίωξης Εγκλήματος (ΕΙΔΑΣΥΔΕ) πως ο επί 50 χρόνια βουλευτής Ρεθύμνου είχε ζητήσει από δύο συναδέλφους τους να «αθωώσουν» έμπορο ναρκωτικών, προσφέροντας ως αντάλλαγμα διορισμό στη γυναίκα του ενός και καλή μεταχείριση στο Σώμα και για τους δύο.
